Volunteering at Friends-International

At Friends-International, we very much welcome responsible and impactful volunteering in our programs.

Responsible volunteering is a fast-growing global concern now, with an increasing number of countries enforcing legislation to reduce harmful volunteering and voluntourism practices such as unskilled volunteers working directly with children, whether in orphanages, schools or other organizations.

We wholeheartedly agree and have actively advocated against these practices for many years now through our ChildSafe campaigns.

We believe that transfer of appropriate skills to local staff is the best kind of volunteering, and we have provided a range of Tips and tools for potential volunteers to give and get the best from their experience at our ChildSafe website – find these at this link.

We often have volunteering positions available, however, if you wish to send an open application to hr@friends-international.org and kindly offer your skills and time, we will gladly consider it. Some of the areas where we usually have needs are Communications, Design, Research, IT, HR, Marketing, Vocational Training etc.

We also have a range of terms and conditions which apply to our volunteer positions at Friends-International, please read these (below) before you apply for any of our volunteer positions.

  • You should provide us with a full CV with references, a cover letter and whenever possible a police background check.
  • You should have a specialty or a skill which is useful for our staff and our programs. While our field programs are not designed for training purposes, we welcome those who can contribute with specific expertise or perform duties that directly support our organization’s work. On occasion, we may offer internship opportunities, but these will come with specific requirements, such as proficiency in the local language or other relevant qualifications.
  • You will always work with staff (not with children directly) providing specific training or carrying out duties which reduce the workload of the staff in administrative capacities.  Examples could be conducting research or working on reports and presentations.
  • We welcome volunteer project proposals that align with our goals and complement Friends-International’s lesson plans and schedules. If you have designed a project you wish to implement, please present an outline of it (considering the above points) alongside a tentative budget. Please ensure that any suggested projects fit within our staff’s existing plans and timelines. All proposals will be carefully considered by our management team, and while we appreciate every idea, only those that meet our current needs and priorities will be approved.
    • All accepted volunteers will sign a contract and receive a job description with Friends-International. The contract will be time-bound with expected results clearly identified. The minimum length of contract is 3 months, which can be renewed (shorter periods may be acceptable; depending on our requirements at a given time). All volunteers undergo an orientation visit to program activities before starting their work, whatever the duration of their volunteering time.
    • Our volunteers are directly supervised by and are responsible to Friends-International. If the volunteer mission requires spending time in one of the Friends Alliance programs, a specific Team Leader will be appointed to oversee each volunteer, under direct monitoring by the Program Director. As a program volunteer, you will be monitored on a day-to-day basis by the Project Manager in charge, with reports going to the Program Director.
    • When your volunteering is complete, all reports, papers, etc. produced by you will remain the property of Friends-International. The intellectual property clause in your contract clarifies the use of material / work created by the volunteer, and any abuse in regard of this could lead to legal action. We will issue a letter of recommendation for you based on the outcome of your volunteering.

    Thank you for reading!
