Dear Friends,
It gives me great pleasure to inform you that Project Alternativas & Opportunidades will be celebrating its 20th Anniversary of operations this coming week. On May 30, 1989 the University of Tulane Medical Center signed an international agreement of cooperation with the Ministry of Health, the National Autonomous University of Honduras and the Honduras Social Security Institute. One year later in 1990, under the auspices of this agreement Project Alternatives began operations providing an integrated community based service structure for the working children, street children and their families of Tegucigalpa. In 1993 the Rotary Foundation provided a 3-H grant in order to establish an open center of operations as a complementary service structure to that of Project Alternatives. Thus the Rotary Friendship House, Project Opportunities, was born and Rotarians have been collaborating with the Project since that time. In 1996 the two institutions were formally united under a local non-governmental voluntary organization, Project Alternatives & Opportunities. Initially the services were offered in the major 6 non-formal markets and the streets of Tegucigalpa. During one period of time, a mobile library was established in a major peri-urban area of the capital city. The Project continues to operate in the markets. It has been extended over more recent years to serve 3 communities which surround the Municipal Dump . The project has provided health, education and other social services permanently over the past twenty years. Today an at- risk population of 3,500 which includes 800 adults and the remainder of them children continue to benefit from the generosity of our international partners.
On behalf of the staff and the beneficiary population I wish to take this opportunity to thank you very much for your participation at some time during the lifetime of this effort to improve the quality of life of the poor and extreme poor of Honduras.
We are ALIVE AND WELL and plan to continue in our efforts for many years into the future.
Sincerely yours,
Donald C. Kaminsky
