INDONESIA
Banda Aceh, in Indonesia, was subject to a conflict lasting 30 years and was the area the hardest hit by the 2004 tsunami. An estimated 130 000 people were killed in Aceh. Many children were orphaned and there are now about 400 children and youth living and working on the streets in Aceh. As a result of the tsunami, the conflict in the area ended, but the effects of the long period of instability remain.
Due to reconstruction efforts and the number of NGOs that were present immediately after the tsunami, this number has been increasing as Banda Aceh is now seen as an attractive city for children and youth.
