Banda Aceh, in Indonesia, was subject to a conflict lasting 30 years and was the area the hardest hit by the 2004 tsunami. An estimated 130 000 people were killed in Aceh. Many children were orphaned and there are now about 400 children and youth living and working on the streets in Aceh. As a result of the tsunami, the conflict in the area ended, but the effects of the long period of instability remain.

Due to reconstruction efforts and the number of NGOs that were present immediately after the tsunami, this number has been increasing as Banda Aceh is now seen as an attractive city for children and youth.

Friends-International has programs in Banda Aceh to address these issues:

Teman Baik in Banda Aceh: is working with over 300 children and youth every month, this program addresses a range of issues that marginalized children and families in post conflict and post tsunami Aceh, are facing.

		The ChildSafe Network: is collaborating with the Becak (tuk tuk) Association with support from DinSos and religious leaders to protect children in Aceh.				CYTI Network: is identifying potential CYTI Network partners in Aceh, Medan and Yogyakarta.
