Donation-Installation Thank You
Friends was fortunate this November to secure the donation of a water filtration system from the U.S based NGO, ‘A Child’s Right’ to be installed in our Canteen. The high-tech, UV light water systems ‘A Child’s Right’ installs are relatively small and capable of purifying up to 600 gallons of water every hour, requiring a minimal plumbing and electricity. Friends now has enough crystal clean water, free from bacteria and viruses, to provide enough drinking water to the 800+ children and youth in our centre daily as well as all the drinking water needs our four Transitional Homes.
Thank you ‘A Child’s Right’!

Kaliyan Mith's first student placed in employment
Pros, one of the students in Kaliyan Mith’s cooking class, is a former street living child from Siem Reap. After the opening of the Transitional Home, Pros lived in Kaliyan Mith’s house and studied at the Training Center. During 8 months of studying with us, Pros made a lot of effort in capturing the knowledge of cooking because he would like to spend the rest of his life in this field.
Now, Pros has just started to work as the assistant of the chef in the small Khmer restaurant in Siem Reap and he became historically the first student from Kaliyan Mith to be placed in employment. We are very proud of him and Pros says “I am so happy to work now!”

The 2008 Espíritu Awards
Friends-International is one of 4 organisations in the world to be awarded the 2008 Espiritu Award from the Isabel Allende Foundation. The award recognizes Friends-International's work in Cambodia with children who have been victimized or exploited by human trafficking.
It is a great honour that Friends-International continues to be recognized for its commitment to working with marginalized and vulnerable children and youth.
Here is what the Foundation said:
Friends-International seeks to reduce the number of street children in Southeast Asia. Working in Phnom Penh, Cambodia, the organization provides transitional housing, offers education and vocational training for children, places them with extended families or in foster care, and assists available family members with finding jobs.
It also supports trafficking prevention programs, trains professionals to work with street children and offers medical care for those with AIDS.
“Shelter is basic to human survival,” says Allende. “No child can thrive while living on the street. It is imperative that we move street children into healthy, stable environments and give them a chance at normal childhood.”
There are an estimated 150 million street children worldwide. Experts say that number could climb to 800 million by 2020, fueled by increasing urbanization and poverty, the devastating effects of HIV/AIDS, and the spread of civil unrest and war. Friends-International comes to the aid of children living on the streets, either alone or with their families, who are in danger of being sexually abused and exploited, and are vulnerable to drug addiction and disease. As a result, these children are more likely to attend school and become independent and productive members of their communities.

Friends receives international recognition for its Drugs Program
Friends-International and Mith Samlanh have been awarded a special Certificate of Honorable Mention at the Mentor Foundations Mentor International Prevention Awards, for the organizations work in drug prevention with street youth.
The second Mentor International Prevention Awards Gala was held on 28 June at the Polo Club Saint-Tropez, France. Presented by Mentor's President, Her Majesty the Queen of Sweden, these Awards recognise and celebrate promise and achievement in drug abuse prevention globally.
Recent surveys conducted by Friends-International and Mith Samlanh on substance use in Phnom Penh, show the total number of street children and youth using substances represents 49.8% of the total street living population. The percentage of injecting drug use within the substance using population is reported to be 10.1%. With the numbers of street children and youth estimated to be 20 000, this is a significant issue within the community.
Friends-International’s drug program is tailored exclusively to meet the needs of young people using drugs and those vulnerable to drug use, making the program unique, given few such services exits for children and adolescents across the world. Starting in 1999 with prevention work, the program expanded to include harm reduction in 2000 and detoxification and rehabilitation in 2004. The project now reaches out to 80 children a day on the streets of Phnom Penh.

Home-Based Producers on a discovery trip in Phnom-Penh
On Tuesday 29^th July, our 1^st group of Home Based Production producers from Andong community participated in a ''discovery day'' in Phnom-Penh, visiting all Mith Samlanh and Friends-International shops, several other NGOs workshops, the different suppliers of three main markets and the famous Sorya Shopping Center (they were especially attracted to the big mechanical stairs, lots of fun there!).
Everyone was very interested in the visits, which were professionally organized and lead by Mr Hoin, and we believe this will be a good eye-opener for all our producers to understand the market better and to develop furthermore their activities and their potential.
The next groups (including Kompong-Cham) will be visiting soon...
Thanks to Le Cafe du Centre for the yummy lunch and to the donor, EDC, for funding this great activity.

Mith Samlanh Land Update
We’ve filled our first wall with bricks, but still need $1,539,000 before our loan is repaid! Buy a brick and help us buy our Center in Phnom Penh.
Our current repayments on our loan are listed below, and while we have made significant progress on this, still need your help. Our centre provides food, shelter, education, medical care and vocational training to over 800 children and youth per day and operates as the centre for all our outreach work where we have daily contact with over 1,000 street children.

Friends Movie - now showing!
When Leslie Hope came to Cambodia and visited Friends in 2005, she decided then and there that she wanted to do something to help the organization. She knew immediately what she could do – make a movie.
Two years later, the movie, called ‘What I See When I Close My Eyes’ has already featured in film festivals across the US and Canada and had its premiere in at Club Friends, at Mith Samlanh. The movie shows students at Mith Samlanh talking about their lives, their hopes and their dreams by painting life size portraits of themselves.
Leslie returned to Phnom Penh for the first time since making the documentary, and was special guest at the screening in Phnom Penh. She spoke with the 200 guests about making the film and how she hoped that her movie could make a difference to the lives of the kids at Mith Samlanh. To read more about the movie visit www.what-i-see-movie.org
Copies of the movie are available for people who want to use it to run their own fundraiser for Friends. To register your interest, please email: events@friends-international.org

Opening of welding and motor mechanic training at Kaliyan Mith’s Educational Center, Siem Reap.
In July, two new trainings were officially in Educational Center of Siem Reap: welding and motor mechanic training. So far, 6 students have joined the welding training and another 20 students are studying motor mechanics.
The motor mechanic training is designed for youth over the age of 15, and the program is also offered to both youth and adults with disabilities. Our mechanics teacher, Mr Hak Lim Heang is himself disabled, and is an inspiration to all the students.
Now, the Educational Center of Siem Reap also provides vocational training to vulnerable youth with disabilities. There are limited services for the disabled in Siem Reap and we are very happy to be able to provide support to this group.

Friends needs your help!
Building/Structural Engineer wanted:
Friends (Mith Samlanh) is looking for a Building / Structural Engineer to inspect and write a report on the state of the five main buildings within the Friends centre. Some of these buildings are very old, and are inadequate for their current purposes.
Friends would prefer a volunteer with a current Engineers registration in Australia, Europe, Canada, NZ or the US to review and assess the buildings and write a report with recommendations / cost analysis of renovation and rebuilding.
Shipping Company wanted:
Friends produces many home-based products such as bags, necklaces and clothes which give families income for the parents, enabling children to go to school. This provides a job, an education and a future. They’re products that make a difference.
Shippers can make a difference by sending our products out to the world. Help to grow our social production project and to get more mothers in gainful employment so that they can send their children to school. The world is asking for products that make a difference, we just need to get them out there. We need a shipping company that can handle freight from Phnom Penh and could ship quantities of 10-35kg of products to Australia, US, Canada, France, Germany and Italy and ideally a door-to-door service.
Contact info@friends-international.org for any support on making our products more widely available.
Building Company / Building Supplier Wanted:
Once Mith Samlanh has made more inroads into our loan and reduced this to a more manageable level, we plan to design our centre to our needs and this may necessitate the destruction of some of our old and not really functional, buildings. To this end, we are seeking the donations from any building companies who may be interested in supplying fundamental structural supplies and equipment as part of their corporate sponsorship programs.
We are also looking for a volunteer Chef /Trainer for our restaurants. If you or someone you know would be interested in this challenging volunteer position have a look at the details here.

Memorandum of Understanding enables project for street children to continue for a further 3 years
Friends-International and the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare signed a new three-year agreement on Monday 3 March in the capital of Lao PDR, Vientiane.
The Peuan Mit project for street children, their families and their communities, is run by the Ministry of Labor and Social Welfare (MoLSW) and Friends-International. The official name of the project is: “Building a Sustainable Street Children Project in Lao P.D.R. Implementation and Capacity Building”.
Peuan Mit’s three main objectives are to reintegrate street children back into Lao society (family, school, workplace); to prevent new children from becoming street children and to train the social workers of the MoLSW in all aspects of the projects so that they are eventually able to run the project themselves in the future. The Peuan Mit teams provide medical care, non-formal education, vocational training, life skills education, and recreational activities (games, sports, dancing and painting) to up to 1500 children per month.

Soccer fever in Thailand
In March this year, the 2008 Ban Phumvet Football competition was held over a total of 5 days. Ban Phumvet is a shelter for boys, located in Bangkok. The first 4 days of the competition were held over 2 weeks and involved children already staying in Ban Phumvet boys home. Kids were divided into teams of under 15s and over 15s and for those who were not so interested in playing, or unable to cheerleading activities were organised. Lots of grass skirts, paper hats and plenty of face painting! Sack races were also held for those not participating in the matches themselves and FI obtained permission for young from Ban Raitipung to come and join in the cheerleading. On the final day, two teams, including one made up of children from the street, and one from Bangkok Municipal Authority communities were invited to join and play against the winning teams from the shelter tournament. This was a significant day in the history of Ban Phumvet - they agreed to let us bring in street children….and let them leave again at the end of the day.

Tooit Tooit opens in Siem Reap
On Friday January 25, the first Friends-International shop in Siem Reap opened in the old market.
Tooit Tooit Siem Reap is based on the same concept as Tooit Tooit in Phnom Penh, selling recycled, fun and different products made by mothers from the Siem Reap community so that their children can go to school. Some of the mothers participating in the program have been repatriated from Thailand, as part of the repatriation project of Friends-International Thailand and Cambodia.
The new shop has been designed with the help of well known Siem Reap based architect, Miss Lisa Ros from ‘Asma Architects’. Tooit Tooit currently sells products made by home based productions in Phnom Penh and Siem Reap, but the mothers in Siem Reap are currently receiving skills training and eventually the whole shop will be stocked with products made in Siem Reap. As with all home based products, they are certified ChildSafe, so proceeds from all purchases go toward helping vulnerable children and their families.

Thanks to JACQUES SERVIERES, a French sculptor who led a very special event with our street kids in Siem Reap.
Sculpture activities wer organized in the Kaliyan Mith Drop-In Center, from August 21-24 2007.
Over 4 afternoons 94 children, including street working children, street living children and the children from the temples, participated in making tiles from clay. The children all had a great time making their tiles, even though it was the first time sculpting for many of them. At the end of the session, 80 sculptures were produced, with a different theme chosen for each afternoon. These included fish, buffalo, the face of Apsara and one afternoon of free design.
