{"id":5718,"date":"2018-10-21T14:46:49","date_gmt":"2018-10-21T07:46:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/?p=5718"},"modified":"2019-02-21T15:31:36","modified_gmt":"2019-02-21T08:31:36","slug":"education-for-chenda","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/index.php\/education-for-chenda\/","title":{"rendered":"Education for Chenda"},"content":{"rendered":"\n<p><em>A child&#8217;s right to education is the centerpiece of this story from one of our Cambodia programs.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chenda* is&nbsp; ten years old&nbsp;and lives with her grandmother and sister in a simple house&nbsp;constructed of zinc on the side of a public road in Teksen Tbong community in Siem Reap, Cambodia.&nbsp; She has seen many changes in her young life, and some of these have been&nbsp;very unsettling for her. When she was seven her father died, and shortly afterwards, her mother migrated out of Siem Reap province in search of work.&nbsp; She did not inform the family where she was going, and her whereabouts&nbsp;are unknown at the moment.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Chenda\u2019s grandmother struggled to care for the two girls and to earn enough money to look after them.&nbsp; She felt she could not support them to access their right to education &#8211; when Chenda was 8, she was old enough to go to school but she was not enrolled. <a href=\"https:\/\/friends-international.org\/in-cambodia\/\">Kaliyan Mith<\/a> (KMSR), the Friends-International program in Siem Reap, works closely with this community, and when one of the social workers was conducting follow-up visits in the area, they were informed of Chenda\u2019s situation by one of her neighbors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>KMSR went to see them, at first providing counselling&nbsp;to Chenda and her family.&nbsp; During follow up assessments they discovered that Chenda and her sister did not have birth certificates.&nbsp; They also found that grandmother relied on the two girls to&nbsp;boost her income, cutting the labels off plastic water bottles before they were recycled.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-gallery columns-2 is-cropped wp-block-gallery-1 is-layout-flex\"><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"683\" src=\"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/IMG_1896-1024x683.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"5719\" data-link=\"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/?attachment_id=5719\" class=\"wp-image-5719\"\/><\/figure><\/li><li class=\"blocks-gallery-item\"><figure><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" width=\"1024\" height=\"682\" src=\"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Remedial-Education-PP-5-FOR-WEB-1024x682.jpg\" alt=\"\" data-id=\"5531\" data-link=\"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/index.php\/8247-raised-for-migrant-children\/remedial-education-pp-5-for-web\/\" class=\"wp-image-5531\" srcset=\"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Remedial-Education-PP-5-FOR-WEB-1024x682.jpg 1024w, http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Remedial-Education-PP-5-FOR-WEB-300x200.jpg 300w, http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Remedial-Education-PP-5-FOR-WEB-768x512.jpg 768w, http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2018\/07\/Remedial-Education-PP-5-FOR-WEB.jpg 1400w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1024px) 100vw, 1024px\" \/><\/figure><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>KMSR contacted the nearby public school director to have both Chenda and her sister enrolled.&nbsp; The girls were provided by the Kaliyan Mith team with all the materials they needed for school, including uniforms and&nbsp; school bags. &nbsp;The social worker also collaborated with the local authorities to&nbsp;ensure&nbsp;birth certificates were provided for Chenda and her sister.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After going to public school, Chenda and her sister received regular follow-up visits, both&nbsp;at school and at home.&nbsp; These follow up visits have continued throughout the year.&nbsp; Their social worker&nbsp;also spent time counselling&nbsp;Chenda\u2019s grandmother to emphasize how important it is the children regularly attend school, and to help her find other ways to support the family.
