When we see children on the streets, it is\u00a0a\u00a0natural instinct\u00a0to want to help. For many, that means giving\u00a0direct monetary donations.\u00a0\u00a0However, supporting organized begging networks financially empowers those who exploit hardship, especially when children are involved.\u00a0ChildSafe\u00a0advocates for respecting children&#8217;s rights and protecting their futures by encouraging support that\u00a0gets them off the streets,\u00a0back into school\u00a0and provides\u00a0genuine\u00a0assistance\u00a0rather than reinforcing exploitative practices.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Organized begging further complicates our understanding of generosity.\u00a0Reports of individuals using QR codes to\u00a0solicit\u00a0funds reveal a worrying trend where casual compassion could contribute to destructive cycles.\u00a0This is further compounded by some social media influencers, who\u00a0normalise\u00a0actions\u00a0which\u00a0are frankly exploitative, giving\u00a0money or gifts to gain followers\u00a0or clicks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Good intentions can yield unintended negative consequences. Friends-International\u00a0and\u00a0ChildSafe, through resources such as their\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/thinkchildsafe.org\/travelers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">7 Tips for Travelers<\/a>,\u00a0suggest\u00a0supporting or\u00a0donating\u00a0via channels which\u00a0ensure aid reaches those most at risk, particularly vulnerable children.\u00a0For example, engaging with\u00a0established,\u00a0reputable\u00a0local organizations can provide clear\u00a0support\u00a0pathways\u00a0that prioritize education and rehabilitation over spontaneous donations that may perpetuate begging.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a society, our challenge is to reshape the narrative around aid in Cambodia&nbsp;and other countries. Instead of fostering a &#8216;charity market&#8217; that distorts goodwill into exploitation, we must create a framework where donations&nbsp;contribute to long-term change.
