my answer was yes, of course!<\/p>\n<p>Bad idea: as a big anti-government demonstration was planned for that day, which might be followed by weeks of protests and fights\u2026<\/p>\n<p>I\u2019d heard rumblings about a demonstration when I was back in Cambodia, but hadn\u2019t imagined it would be so big this time.<\/p>\n<p>Many Egyptians were worried about potential bloodshed and were thinking about leaving the capital or staying at home, but many also planned to join the protests\u2026. so I had to think about staying away from Cairo for a few days to wait to see how things went.<\/p>\n<p>My choice was made &#8211; Children at FACE (one of our CYTI Partners in Cairo) asking social workers (about me): \u2018Who is this guy? We talked to him and he does not understand anything. Is he slow or has intellectual problems?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u2018Why are you not Egyptian?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u2018Why do you speak English?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; \u2018You are not Egyptian? You are French??! Ah from Morocco or Algeria so\u2026 (Referring to the colonial past of France)\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&#8211; At the airport immigration I was asked:<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Why do you have a French passport?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Why do you look like an Egyptian?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Why is your father named that?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Lesson learnt 2 &#8211; First sentence I learned in Arabic during my first trip: \u2018I do not speak Arabic, I am not Egyptian\u2019!<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_3654\" style=\"width: 235px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/FACE-Outreach-work-in-the-streets-of-Cairo.jpg\"><img aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-3654\" decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"size-medium wp-image-3654\" alt=\"\" src=\"http:\/\/www.friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/FACE-Outreach-work-in-the-streets-of-Cairo-225x300.jpg\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" srcset=\"http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/FACE-Outreach-work-in-the-streets-of-Cairo-225x300.jpg 225w, http:\/\/friends-international.org\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2013\/08\/FACE-Outreach-work-in-the-streets-of-Cairo-768x1024.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 225px) 100vw, 225px\" \/><\/a><p id=\"caption-attachment-3654\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">FACE Outreach work in the streets of Cairo<\/p><\/div>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><i>No easy way out\u2026<\/i><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>\u2018As demonstrations were still going on the day of my flight, I was worried about potential checkpoints or protests that would block the way to the airport. So I got to the airport very early: 5 hours before the flight. Helpful? No.<\/p>\n<p>Bad luck 1: the flight was delayed.<\/p>\n<p>Bad luck 2: I could not catch my connection so I was stuck there<\/p>\n<p>Bad luck 3: I asked what to do at the check in counter? \u201cIt is ok, just one minute sir\u201d the guy told me after I gave him my passport.<\/p>\n<p>A detail, but in Egypt this is usually a <em>very bad sign<\/em>. Last time I was told \u201cIt is ok, just one minute\u201d, it was before going on outreach with FACE and that one minute eventually turned into three hours.<\/p>\n<p>After one hour waiting and many \u201cIt is ok, one minute sir\u201d-s, looking at all the other passengers checking in, I asked: \u2018I think it is not ok, so what is going on?\u2019<\/p>\n<p>The officer asked me for my passport (which of course I had already given him). He told me he did not have it.<\/p>\n<p>Actually they had lost my passport\u2026<\/p>\n<p>Bad luck 4: Passport lost, it is almost 3am, protests going on in Cairo\u2026 that is not how I was expecting my holiday to start.<\/p>\n<p>It took another hour for them to find my passport after I shouted so much and actually yelled: \u2018 I\u2018ll block the queue!! Until you find my passport nobody will check-in\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>Finally it worked.
